EL PROGRAMA de MEJORAMIENTO del MAIZ "VERANERO"
I will first explain the Corn Improvement Project in English, y abajo del video lo hare en espanol. EL PROGRAMA de MEJORAMIENTO del MAIZ "VERANERO"
Nutritionists general agree that corn in and of itself is not nutritionally capable of "sustaining and supporting human development and health." This usually was describing the white corn usually preferred by many Indians in Guatemala, and especially in the Alta Verapaz area. We found that the exception was yellow varieties of corn that had good quantities of vitamin A. After years of experimentation with many varieties of yellow corn, we finally concluded that only one was naturally resistant to insect and microbial enemies, grew well in the area, and primarily was totally acceptable to the people. It was their summer corn called "VERANERO," but with extremely low yields of 50 lbs./"cuerda" or 1/9th of an acre--with 95% of plants only producing one ear of corn, but otherwise had all the necessary characteristics--it was a small plant that would not deplete the soil, matured in around 4 months, and usually a reddish/yellow corn indicating some vitamin A. Thus was born this important project to improve the yield, the quality and vitamin A content, and shorten the maturity period so as to get 2 and even 3 planting per year. The 1300% increase in yields we achieved over 6 years--from 50 lbs. to 650 lbs--started by carefully selecting our first seed ONLY from the rare plants that produced two ears from one plant--in the beginning ears of poor quality. As the percentage of two-ear plants increased, our selection for seed narrowed only to those of better quality. Then narrowed again to quality two-ear plants with a richer coloration tending towards "golden yellow," that our tests proved was higher in vitamin A. Eventually 3-ear plants began appearing and seed came from those of good quality in size and coloration. Eventually the selection of seed that we were looking for narrowed even more to those plants that matured at 3-1/2 months, rather than 4. So, in 6 years we achieved a 1300% increase in yield and with a corn of greater nutritional quality.

están de acuerdo que, "Maiz no es alimento capaz a sostener
buen desarrollo humano, ni mantener bien la salud!" Eso
es una descripción del maíz blanco preferido por muchos Indígenas en Guatemala,
y especialmente los de Alta Verapaz. Pero, descubrimos que la excepción
se encuentra con variedades de maíz amarillo que tiene buenas cantidades de
vitamina A. Luego, después de años de experimentación con muchas
variedades de maíz amarillo, concluimos que solamente había una variedad
resistente a insectos y enfermedades, que crecía bien en el lugar, y fue
totalmente aceptada por la gente--porque era su MAIZ VERANERO.
Pero tenía un rendimiento muy bajo con un promedio de solamente 50
libras/cuerda, con casi todas las plantas produciendo solamente una mazorca por
mata--pero siempre con una o dos plantas que daban dos. De otra manera tenía
muchas ventajas, como, era una planta pequeña que no agotaba la tierra, se
maduraba en como 4 meses, y generalmente era de un color rojo/amarrillo,
indicando que tenía algo de vitamina A, Así nació el proyecto
importante de mejorar la variedad para mayor rendimiento, mejor color y
contenido de vitamina A, y acortar el periodo de maduración para poder lograr
2, y aun 3 cosechas al año.
El aumento que logramos de 1300%
en rendimiento atreves de 6 años--desde 50 lbs. hasta 650 libras, comenzó por
seleccionar cuidadosamente la primera semilla solamente de las matas raras que
daban dos mazorcas--aunque fueran de mala calidad. Pero de
siembra/cosecha a otras siembras/cosechas, empezaron a aumentarse el porcentaje
de plantas que daban dos mazorcas, así que nuestra selección se puso más
estricta solamente con las plantas de dos mazorcas y de buena calidad.
Luego, se puso aun más estricta la selección solamente con las de dos
mazorcas y con un color mas dorado que nuestros experimentos indicaban tenían
mas vitamina A. Al fin empezamos a tener plantas de 3 mazorcas buenas del
color dorado. De ultimo empezamos a seleccionar la semilla de las plantas
sobresalientes, que también se maduraban mas rápido--en como 3-1/2 meses en vez
de 4. Así logramos en 6 años un aumento en rendimiento de 1300%!....y de
mejor calidad.
