Maria del Carmen Bol, key family member for 25 years, who for the last 17 years managed magnificently the Valparaiso/Las Victorias Store in Coban.....
In the first two pictures below we see Maria del Carmen in the early years at the Central House in Valparaiso.

She was always the hardest and most loyal worker over many years.
Siempre
era la compañera mas trabajadora y leal...atravez de todos los años!

In 1976 her first son, David Moroni, was born.
En 1976 nació su primer hijo, David Moroni.
She eventually had her 2nd son, Herbert, and soon took charge of the store in Coban, as we see in the picture below, managing it for the last 17 years until the plantation was sold in 1993.

Here I am reunited with this most faithful of all employees, along with her son, Herbert, on the left, then David Moroni in the middle.
Aqui estoy reunido con ella, la mas fiel de los empleados, junto con su hijo, Herbert, a la izquierda, luego, David Moroni en medio.
Here I am happy to be photographed with her and her three grandsons, nearly 50 years after we first met, and began blessing each other's lives.

Yes, she says there are health issues, but let's be honest, she is just as beautiful today and maybe even moreso.

Next visit with Carlos Yat Valdez....Visita con Carlos Yat Valdez
Carlos, when 12 years old, joined us near the beginning with his family--mother, Doña Carmelina, & brothers, Ruben and Victor Ramon"Moncho." We should call him "the first student" (besides me as I had to burn the midnight oil keeping one chapter ahead of those I was teaching). He became a key companion, as he spoke Poqomchi, visiting & treating the sick, and in all aspects of the agro-business & Church/missionary work, and went on to eventually become one of the Valparaiso LDS Branch Presidents, and towards the end....the manager of the Valparasio Plantation for the last 13 years;
Carlos, se juntó con
nosotros a los 12 años, con su familia: Madre, Dona Carmelina, y
hermanos, Rubén y Víctor Ramón "Moncho."
Debemos llamarle "el primer alumno" (además de mí, porque tuve
que desvelarme cada noche para mantenerme un capitulo adelante de mis
alumnos--puesto que todo era nuevo para mí). Era compañero clave, porque
hablaba Poqomchi, visitando y tratando a los enfermos, y en todos aspectos del
agro-negocio, y actividades religiosas/misionaras, y al fin llegó a ser uno de los Presidentes de Rama
(SUD), y por los últimos 13 años administrador de la Finca Valparaíso.

In 1971 when 15-16 years old, Carlos, along with 16 year old Daniel Choc from Patzicia, we see below, were called as youthful local missionaries.

Carlos & Daniel, during the next 18-24 months taught and baptized 26 at Valparaiso.

Carlos, on the left, became a counselor to President Miguel Angel Ortiz, and other counselor, Miguel Max, when a branch was organized at Valparaiso in 1973.

Later, when the LDS Coban District was organized in Alta Verapaz, Carlos became Branch President at Valparaiso, seen above directing a meeting.

Carlos, on the right, also became part of the leadership of the Valparaiso Cooperative in 1974, primarily in charge of accounting and money management.

THEN CAME THE GREATEST SOCCER TOURNAMENT OF ALL TIME!
Carlos was an integral part of the team "The Lamanite Youth," who became the area Champions, winning all 9 games, scouring an incredible 38 goals to 3!

Carlos era un jugador principal en el equipo "La Juventud
Lamanita," quienes llegaron a ser Campeones de la Region, ganando todos
los 9 partidos, metiendo increiblemente 38 goles a 3!
Carlos gained experience in all aspects of the agro-business, including for a time transporting products to the Coban store. In 1981 he became Manager of the plantation and served in that capacity until the end in late 1993 when the plantation was sold.
Carlos atreves de los años recibió experiencia en todos los aspectos del trabajo de la empresa, inclusive
por un tiempo llevando los productos a la tienda en Cobán, y en 1981 llegó a
ser Administrador de la Finca Valparaíso y sirvió encargado de la Finca hasta
su venta al fin de 1993.

I'm so grateful Carlos dropped by Chepina's place to visit and renew our precious friendship & father/son relationship.

Here we come to another key "brother," and partner at
Valparaiso--being the first native resident to be the Manager
of the Valparaiso Plantation, plus President of the Cooperative
organized there, counselor in the first Branch Presidency, and then counselor in the first LDS Coban
District Presidency.
He has been mentioned in the Historical
Review quite a lot, and much more could be said....and eventually will in a
book or two. Follows an album of his photos over the years.
Ahora llegamos a otro "hermano" clave, quizás
el más importante de todos mis socios y compañeros deValparaíso--quien llegó a
ser el primer residente de la Finca Valparaíso para ser Administrador, y después,
al mismo tiempo, Presidente de la Cooperativa, luego, consejero en la primera
Presidencia de Rama (SUD), y después, consejero en la primera Presidencia de
Distrito de Cobán (SUD).
Mucho ha sido mencionado en el Repaso Histórico,
y mucho mas se puede decir….y al fin muchos detalles serán escritos en uno o
dos libros. En seguido hay un álbum de

Even while still a student, he was so amazing he was employed fulltime and put in charge of the cattle--but in his spare time continued learning EVERYTHING. Later, with the Victorias Dairy, we see him in a livestock show parading MAJA which cow defeated the Central American Grand Champion of the Jersey breed.
Aun, mientras que era mi alumno, era tan sobresaliente que fue empleado
tiempo completo y puesto encargado del ganado. Pero en su tiempo libre siguió
aprendiendo TODO y llegó a ser maestro de los demás alumnos. Mas
adelante, con la Lechería Las Victorias, le observamos arriba participando en
una Exposición Ganadera donde nuestra vaca MAJA venció la Gran Campeona de
Centro América de la Raza Jersey. Abajo ensenando a los jóvenes
como tratar una vaca con "fiebre de leche."

la escuela de la aislada aldea de Pambach, haciendo un convenio de ayudarles a
construir su escuela.
Miguel directing a meeting with the Pambach villagers. He had formed a team from Valparaiso to hike the mountain trails to make the normal 3 hour hike, but they were carrying a 150 lb. portable generator, a 16 mm. movie projector, and movies to show the villagers. After the meeting they turned around hiking all night to be back--one time for Church the next day, and another time, to arrive in time for work on Monday morning.

las montanas, una caminata normalmente hecha en 3 horas, pero estaban llevando
una planta eléctrica que pesaba 150 lbs., un proyector de cine de 16mm., un películas
para ensenar a los aldeanos. Al terminar la charla, caminaron toda la noche para
llegar a Valparaíso a tiempo para--una vez para los cultos religiosos el
domingo, y otra vez, a tiempo para trabajar el lunes en la mañana.

Miguel with his family in front of the simple, but healthy, home he was building for himself at Valparaiso...and with his car--the first resident of Valparaiso to have a car. He sadly lost the wife seen above, Delfina, and recently lost his second wife.
Arriba le observamos, con su familia, en frente de la casa
"saludable" que estaba construyendo en Valparaíso....y con su
carro....el siendo el primero de Valparaíso para tener un vehículo propio.
Lamentablemente perdió su esposa vista arriba, Delfina, y hace poco
falleció su segunda esposa.
We observe above an open-air LDS District Conference at Valparaiso, presided over by General Authority, William Bradford, with Counselor in the Presidency, Miguel Max, seen on the right. If I recall the Conference was attended by 456 people. Fifty-three of them were from the remote Chulac Cooperative, Miguel having gone to get them with the Cooperative's diesel truck, making the 10 hour round trip in time for the conference, and then afterwards took them home!

libre en Valparaiso, presidido por Autoridad General William Bradford.
Cincuenta y tres de los mas de 400 en asistencia, eran de la aislada
Finca Cooperativa Chulac. Miguel fue a traerlo en el camion diesel de la
cooperativa, haciendo el viaje en 10 horas. Al concluir la conferencia,
fue a dejarlos.
Once a few of us were in the office at Valparaiso. We had just received a slide program made by the Foundation, entitled,
THE TESTIMONY OF MIGUEL MAX.
Miguel was anxious to see the slides and the only place dark enough was underneath a table projecting on the wall. So while he was down on the floor underneath the table in walked good friend and LDS Regional Representative from Guatemala City, G. Enrique Rittscher.
The strange scene had him remarking, "I don't know who this brother on the floor is, but I predict that one day he will become an important leader!"
HE ALREADY WAS!
Una
vez varios de nosotros estábamos en la oficina trabajando. Apenas habíamos
recibido un programa de transparencias de la Fundación, titulado, EL TESTIMONIO
DE MIGUEL MAX.
Miguel
quería ver las transparencias, pero el único lugar obscuro era abajo de una
mesa, proyectando en la pared. Así que allí estaba en el piso cuando de
repente entro un buen amigo de la capital, y Representante Regional de la
Iglesia Mormona, G. Enrique Rittscher.
Viendo
la escena extraña el dijo:
"No
sé quién es ese hermano en el piso, pero algún día va a llegar a ser un líder
religioso importante!"

We first met in the Salon Municipal on Friday, May 20th. He approached me and said, "Do you know who I am?"
It had been more than 20 years, but, how could I not know who this great man was? For me it was a very emotional re-encounter.
Primeramente nos
encontramos en el Salón Municipal, el viernes, 20 de mayo, Al acercarse a
mí, dijo: "Ud. me reconoce?"
Habían
pasado más de 20 años, pero como era posible no reconocer inmediatamente este hombre
grande? Fue una experiencia muy emocional para mi...y creo para el también.
We met again at the Valparaiso School gathering on Monday, May 23rd, along with Santiago Caal Max, who was Miguel's companion working with the cattle back in the beginning, and it was these two who never failed me, when at times almost all others at times faltered a bit!
Nos juntamos otra vez en
el evento en la Escuela Valparaíso, lunes 23 de mayo, junto con Santiago Caal
Max, quien era compañero de Miguel trabajando con el ganado en el principio.
Fueron estos dos quienes nunca me fallaron, cuando había tiempos en que
muchos fallaban un poco.

Sadly, for the lunch, my photographer (Aura) came up short with a picture, but below is a picture of Diana's beautiful sister, ISIS MARIA, with Rebeca. She was with us for the lunch, having come to see her father run in the Coban International Half Marathon the next day.

For the "Race" the next day, I missed getting a shot of Don Raul, who made it to the finish line in 2:08......so to finish this segment I'll insert a beautiful picture taken by Diana of her daughter dressed in Mayan garb.

Marta Elena in 1985 was the Indian Queen from San Cristobal Verapaz, then chosen as the Princesa Tezulutlan (of the Alta Verapaz area), & runner-up to the National Indian Queen--Rabin Ajau "Daughter of the King."
This all happened when the Foundation was helping to sponsor the National event.

fue la Reina Indígena de San Cristóbal Verapaz, quien luego fue elegida La
Princesa Tzulutlan (de Las Verapaces), y luego en el Festival Nacional, empató con una maestra de San Marcos para ser La Reina Nacional--RABIN AJAU "Hija
del Rey".
Todo esto pasó cuando la Fundación participaba en
patrocinar el Festival Nacional.
For her election as Princesa Tzulutlan she very impressively was spotlighted kneeling down and looking up into the heavens in prayer, surrounded by the elders of the Indian Brotherhood ("Cofradia"). She was dressed in tattered and worn out clothing that was very old. In her speech she made reference to the beautiful, multicolored impressive clothing of the Indians, and then said, "It is a disguise for our suffering and misery!"
She went on explaining that her tattered and worn out clothing was more truly representative of the Indian's poverty and suffering......
...THAT HAS TO BE EFFECTIVELY REMEDIED!
Para su elección como la Princesa Tzulutlan ella, en una forma muy
impresionante, apareció alumbrada de rodillas con sus brazos levantados hacia
el cielo en oración, rodeada por los ancianos de la Cofradía.
Estaba vestida en ropa muy vieja, gastada
y pobre. En su discurso ella hizo referencia a los trajes muy
impresionantes y de mucho colorido de las indígenas, y luego asustó a todos
diciendo,
"Es nada más que un
disfraz para nuestro sufrimiento y miseria!"
Siguió explicando que su ropa gastada y pobre era representativa
de la pobreza y sufrimiento de su gente.....y
QUE EFECTIVAMENTE TIENE QUE SER REMEDIADO!
She won everybody's heart and went on to win easily that crown, and later tied for the National Crown.
Ganó el corazón de todos y fácilmente
recibió la corona de la región. Mas adelante en el Festival Nacional Folklórico
empató con una candidata de San Marcos.
Here she is back then, with her parents.
It was good to see her again and renew, yet again, another old friendship.
Aquí esta ella
en aquel tiempo lejano, junto con sus padres.
Fue bueno verle otra vez y renovar, con otra persona más,
una amistad importante.

Also coming with them for the visit to our hotel was Silvia's son, who is near to finishing Medical School.
